Universal healthcare vs. U.S. law

Some states and municipalities are attempting to offer universal health coverage for residents, but their efforts are being stalled by existing U.S. laws. Why? Because many of the universal coverage proposals include coverage or payment requirements for private-sector businesses, which are specifically protected against such requirements. Should something be done about these laws or not?

Beat smell and beat obesity?

The Pennington Biomedical Research Center at LSU will soon test an intriguing method for combating obesity: blocking a person’s sense of smell. The project has received a green light from the Food & Drug Administration and investigators say they will complete the first phase of the research in the second half of 2008.

Report: Fewer uninsured children in La.

According to a recently released report by the LSU Public Policy Research Lab, there has been a substantial drop in the number of Louisiana chidren and adults without health insurance. The research looks at data from 2005 through 2007.

The analysts said improving the quality of medical care being delivered in Louisiana is critical to improving population health and lowering costs. What do you think?
