Definition of Rx
Prescription – a medical document containing a written request from a doctor (paramedic, midwife, dentist) to a pharmacy about the dispensing of a medicine in a certain dosage and form with an indication of its use. Prescription is the basis for the sale of most medications. The exception is drugs included in the “List of medications and medical devices dispensed without a doctor’s prescription”.
The prescription should be written out using a pen. All the fields should be filled, corrections are not allowed. The following forms of prescription are used for:
- dispensing medications at full cost to adults and children;
- dispensing medications free of charge to certain categories of patients (children under one year of age, invalids), as well as with the partial payment;
- dispensing narcotic and equivalent medicinal products.
Health facilities are provided with prescription forms through local health authorities. Prescription forms for narcotic and equivalent drugs are stored safely in lockers.
Prescriptions are written in a special form in Latin for the pharmacist, for the patient – national languages. The use of abbreviations is permitted only in accordance with the rules adopted in medical and pharmaceutical practice.
The prescription includes the date (day, month, year), surname, initials, patient’s age, as well as the doctor’s name.
The main task of prescription drugs is to stop the mass self-medication of the population. Today, doctors face very serious consequences, among which, for example, allergic reactions, the occurrence of undesirable side reactions (ranging from headache, nausea to death), antibiotic resistance (inappropriate and uncontrolled use of antibiotics results in the absence of their effect).
If the doctor writeы the prescription incorrectly, then the pharmacist has the right not to accept it. For the sale of medications without a prescription, the pharmacy will be punished with a fine.
Last year, the legal authorities checked 968 pharmacies and discovered 2084 cases of a law violation. There is no exact number of sold prescription drugs not according to the legal requirements. If the doctor wrote a trade name instead of the active substance, you can always ask about the generic in the pharmacy and clarify which active substance it contains.
